1. Choose the right VPN type
Business VPN options: WireGuard (fastest, modern), OpenVPN (most compatible), IPSec/L2TP (built into Windows/Mac). For small teams, a managed VPN service (NordLayer, Cisco Meraki) is easier than self-hosted.
2. Install a business VPN client
For managed VPNs: download the client from your provider's dashboard and install on each device. For WireGuard: download from wireguard.com and import the config file provided by your IT admin.
3. Configure split tunneling
Split tunneling routes only business traffic through the VPN while personal browsing uses your normal connection. This improves speed and reduces VPN server load. Configure in your VPN client's advanced settings.
4. Enable automatic VPN on startup
In your VPN client settings, enable 'Connect on startup' or 'Auto-connect'. This ensures remote workers are always protected without needing to manually activate the VPN each session.
5. Test the connection
Visit whatismyip.com while connected to VPN — your IP should show your office or VPN server location, not your home IP. Test access to internal resources (file shares, intranet, printers).
6. Document and distribute configs
Create a simple one-page setup guide for staff. Include the VPN address, credentials, and who to call if it doesn't work. Most VPN issues are user setup errors, not technical failures.
